Childhood Formation, A Bad Car Crash, and An Evening of Kombucha and Chocolate

It's been quite a weekend here. Yesterday, we were in a car crash that totaled our car- or at least left it remarkably un-drivable. Today, we are sore and our injuries test the limits of my herbalist's pouch.
In response to this, we have done much sitting. Icing, some episodes of The Office, and kombucha have kept our spirits up while we wait for our delivery of dinner. My dominant hand was injured by our air bag when it deployed. The pain created by things like... say... cutting the crispy end of chicken or... putting on a hair tie have led me to believe I get the weekend OUT of the kitchen, thank you very much.

We're both on the couch. We have been since we got home from getting the police report at 3. And while we're here to ice and hope for the best during tomorrow's chiropractor visit, there have been some wonderful things. We learned we have such supportive friends- and smart ones! We are enjoying sitting. I have left the kitchen to its own devices for a while. Our dog is reveling in a new type of settled, constant attention for an evening.

We are grateful. No one was really hurt. The car probably needed to be replaced. And since the other car completely lost control on snow and was spinning out of control on a local highway, it looks like we will be considered not-at-fault and be given the chance to replace our sad beater we feel nothing but affection for.

In other news, I have located a used copy of a book that set me on the path to herbalism 20 years ago. I have no idea how I found it or it found me, but I wound up with a copy of an herbalist manual printed in the 70s. I am going to buy the used copy!

I am also going to buy another book that has an aromatic vinegars recipe for headaches like those mentioned in Jane Austen novels.

Lots in the works too: A post on DIY hydrosols is forthcoming. We have been messing around perfecting it for a while and we think its time! Yogurt is soon following. And a homemade mustard is in the works for when I am back on my game and able to cook again. It's going to be a great week or two at The Crunchy Marriage!

  1. I'm glad to hear that you are okay!

Some of the books that set me pretty firmly on my path as a child were my mom's from the hippie days - Laurel's Kitchen, Raising Chickens the Modern Way (though I prefer to raise them the old fashioned way, this book and its siblings about goats and rabbits were fascinating) and of course all the Little House books.
