Our Growing Family

So as we alluded to earlier, we have adopted a flock of chicks. These little fluff balls of cuteness are living in our house for at least six weeks. They arrived two weeks ago, and much to the chagrin of our cats and dog have been getting gads of attention. They are literally the cutest thing ever to have happened.

Amazingly, the dudettes (our chicas are girls, we mean to have a laying flock) arrive by mail. Shipped the day they hatch, they live on their egg gunk for the first day and so have a few hours to travel to you.

Because of shipping rules I don't quite understand, it was cheaper to order 26 than it was to get 12. This is the box the peepers arrived in.

Essentially, the opening of the box was like opening an animal clown car. They kept popping out of their forced snuggle for what seemed like 15 minutes. Instantly they were running around and being stinking adorable.

We mean to keep only 8 of the 26, but adoptions started right away to other chicken enthusiasts.  Their breeds are varied as we essentially got a hatchery choice pack. Originally, we had chosen breeds for specific purposes but the ordering became a problem.

Their coop is in our unused bedroom that we call an office. We've been milling grain for them to eat in Mark's beer brewing grain mill. We found a great recipe and they seem to love it. Soon it may not need to be ground, but we'll see. They also love squash and carrots and long walks on the carpet.

Peep!
Where's my millet fool?

They spent the first day getting used to
not being in a box by huddling together.

The cuteness!!
